NEW YORK--AstraZeneca and Teva Pharmaceuticals announced today that they have agreed to acquire the rights to the blockbuster heartburn drug Nexium from Teva Pharmaceuticals USA in consideration for a royalty-free license to the pharmaceutical company to supply generic versions of the drug in the United States.
The deal was announced by AstraZeneca, a global pharmaceutical company, and Teva, an American pharmaceutical company. The transaction brings together the world’s leading generic drug manufacturers and the U. S. pharmaceutical company as well as a number of pharmaceutical companies that have acquired and built up their own generic drug portfolios. The companies will be involved in the ongoing research and development, regulatory and development of generic versions of Nexium for the United States and other countries, as well as the development and commercialization of Nexium in the developing countries.
The agreement was completed in March and is expected to be completed in the fourth quarter of 2019.
“Our agreement with AstraZeneca is one of the largest in our history,” said Steven H. Johnson, CEO of AstraZeneca. “The integration of this deal will provide an important new opportunity for the U. and other developed markets to advance Nexium generically.”
Teva Pharmaceuticals USA is the first-to-file in the U. for Nexium. The company is the first generic drug company to become a part of the U. drug industry to become part of the global drug industry.
“The acquisition of the U. rights to Nexium from Teva represents a significant opportunity to advance generic Nexium in the U. market,” said Robert L. Shumaker, President and CEO of Teva Pharmaceuticals USA. “It represents another important opportunity to improve our U. brand while also improving our market place.”
Teva Pharmaceuticals USA, an integrated generic pharmaceutical company, has approximately 10,000 employees across the U. and is the largest generic pharmaceutical company in the world. The U. generic pharmaceutical industry is growing at a rapid rate as we face more and more competition for prescription drugs. The industry is projected to grow at a rate of 5.3% from 2020 to 2026.
“This transaction provides an important opportunity for us to develop and commercialize our first generic drug portfolio in the U. S., and our second-to-file strategy is also expected to be successful,” said John J. Ochsner, President and CEO of Teva. “The U. pharmaceutical industry is growing at a fast rate, and Teva Pharmaceuticals USA is also in the early stages of commercialization.”
